Rose Kadera Vastila
Ceramics
Biography
Rose lives in the woods near the North Shore of Lake Superior. Her work is diverse and includes functional stoneware, sculptural ceramics, and a variety of primitive fired vessels.
With advanced degrees in both Art Education and Studio Ceramics she has been making art for over 40 years and has taught art to all ages in rural, international and urban settings.
When folks ask “How long have you been doing this?” or “How long did it take you to make that?”, she usually tells an early childhood story of going to mud pie parties, wading barefoot thru mud puddles, and rolling miles of plasticine snakes. There is also the episode in high school biology class when she was the only one willing to wade into the swamp for organism samples.
After many years as an art educator and parent, her love affair with the earth reignited, she left the city behind, She attunes to nature, simplicity and solitude. She shares her creating days with her putterer spouse, Reijo, a retired, squirrel hunting Jack Russell Terrier, a bouncing Aussie, and a few good mouser’s.
The coffee is always on and her studio is open for visitor’s by chance or by appointment.
In late September her studio is featured in the annual Lake Superior 20/20 Studio Art Tour near Two Harbors. lakesuperior2020.com
Statement
I walk through the woods everyday in awe and wonder at the beauty and the splendor of the decay on the forest floor. I call it enchanted. I marvel at the bark of the decaying trunk; trees clothed in layers of flowing textures of moss, rot, and lichen; a single crumpled dry leaf bouncing at the end of a twig; A few red berries popping in contrast amongst the grasses dancing naked without their green; and intricately patterned and radiating seed pods emerging as the flower petals let go. Along the beaches I observe in awe the rhythms and movement in the dried and gnarled driftwood and the pebbles polished and smooth from their wave and sand beaten toils.
I immerse myself into the unmanifest; the repetitive throwing processes and juxtapose it with the manifest; a conscious search for meaning and form. One may enhance the other. One may collide with the other. One may transform the other. One may become the other. Whatever happens, my intention is to explore this idea of duality and to let it take me in its own direction.
